WEEK TWELVE: Groups Sue Over Seismic Tests In Beluga Habitat

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/story/2012/05/15/north-alaska-beluga-lawsuit.html

In Alaska, a lawsuit is being filed against the National Marine Fisheries Service for issuing permits that allow high-intensity seismic testing around an endangered beluga whales’ habitat. The earsplitting underwater noise threatens the survival of these creatures by making it impossible for them to locate any food via sonic radar. There are only 284 left in the world, and things such as oil and gas drilling only add to the chaos. The judge should find favour with the plaintiff, since the NMFS had no right to further endanger these beautiful belugas.

  1. It is extremely sad that this is happening to these animals, that are rapidly decreasing in number. I believe this is an exhibiton of cruelty to animals, and the perptrators should not be beyond prosecution. This is illegal, and saddening that our world is no longer partaking in good stewardship of the natural abundance bestowed upon us.

  2. It's good that this lawsuit has been filed against these endangered animals. Any thing we can do to stop more endangerment should happen, and not just with these belugas but all other soon-to-be-extinct animals.

  3. It is hard to hear about animals such as these suffering because because of our greed. The judge should be in favor with the plaintive because they have done nothing wrong, they are endangered and are suffering even though they are harmless. I hope the outcome is in the beluga whale’s favor so that they can multiply in numbers and so we can continue to enjoy the company of these beautiful animals.

  4. I think that this is so absolutely selfish on our part. We are just sitting here allowing people to make decisions that are not at all in the environment's (world) interest. People with so much power, should be trusted to make decisions that will benefit our earth as oppose to slowly destroying it. I hope that people put a stop to this and the whales live on!

  5. When a species becomes endangered it seems normal for the government, and nation to do all possible to protect it and turn the cycle around; it’s sad to hear that, that is not the case. These adorable creatures need protection, and the only time our world will care is when they are completely gone and it is too late.
    P.S. These pictures are HILLARIOUS!
